Do´s and Don´t´s when applying ANDRAGOGY to the teaching of children

Class 2006

Do´s

Don´t´s
Take into account the student's needs and expectations.   Andragogy makes a relation between the topic being dealt and the learner's experience. This may not work when teaching young children because they do not have much experience or knowledge of the world.
Motivate students to interact.
Teachers should create a relaxed environment.   Teachers shouldn't force students to learn certain topics.
Teachers should be patient according to students' percepcion, experiences and processes.   Teachers shouldn't give students tasks about topics that they don't understand or have never experienced.
Teachers should change the traditional classroom routine to create an effective learning enviroment.   Teachers have to deal with topics that the kids may have not experienced before and are hard to understand for them.
Incorporate the students' input to the curriculum. Listen to their ideas.   Don't stick to stereotypical tasks or examples that don't reflect the childrens' diversity and experiences.
Furniture arrangements in circles make also younger learners feel safer and gives the teacher a broader view of all of them. This way of organizing the classroom facilitates the teacher's work making it easier for her to help and guide each student.   Break the traditional classroom routine in long courses.
Encourage learning by doing experiential techniques, so the students will be able to gain a different way of learning by sharing.   Don´t deal with topics that the children may have not experienced.
make a relation between the topic being dealt and the learner's experience
Let students introduce themselves in their first class at school   Include topics not experienced.
Incorporate humour into classroom activities   Take in account that students might not know how to deal with some topics
Get students to discuss answers to assignments in groups
Add humour in the class.
Create a more flexible, more comfortable and relaxed atmosphere in the classroom

On May 12 last year, I'd written "Great job, Romina!", because she'd creted this page herself.

There are many inaccuracies in this table. Some don't's seem to belong to the other column... and many ideas need to be reconsidered... Also, there are a couple of language mistakes... Class 2006 never got to producing a drafted version of this poster. Let's see how far Class 2007 can go!
