Is andragogy just for adults?
- If you look at the Greek word andros, meaning "man," and agogus meaning "leader of," it may mean that it is an adult learning theory. But, the only principle which makes andragogy for adults is that of experience. If a given teacher applies the remaining four principles proposed by Knowles, and at the same time helps build experience (not take it for granted, as it is in the case of adults), then Andragogy is for all ages.
- When Malcolm Knowles introduced the theory of andragogy, he had the adult learner in mind. Later, however, other authors came to see pedagogy also as not satisfactory for children in modern societies, and discussed how andragogy could be applied to teaching all ages, of course bearing in mind children's experience is bound to be more limited than that of most adults...
- Marcia Conner writes: "Unfortunately, andragogy usually is cited in education texts as the way adults learn. Knowles himself concedes that four of andragogy's five key assumptions apply equally to adults and children. The sole difference is that children have fewer experiences and pre-established beliefs than adults and thus have less to relate."
